God or Devil?

June 17, 2009 at 8:19 pm | In Uncategorized | 5 Comments

There is a movie called Aalanvandhan (Abhay in hindi), starring kamal hassan which made more news about his beefed up body than the actual movie itself which sank without a trace. He plays a dual role, one representing the god and the other, devil, with the actual thought process being to reflect the two sides that coexist in each individual. There is a civil side in every person which learns and adapts to the societal discipline and there is a wild side which is destructive but buried. The destructive side is more opportunistic and is usually triggered by power. The power to which the civil side has always bowed down to. The inhibitions, the limitations, the rules etc if suddenly removed from life, would yield an irrestible indulgence. It could be as small as shouting on your parents coz you can, or breaking a traffic signal coz you can get away with it or cheating on a partner coz he wouldnt know.

Before you think what all this crap is about, I had the opportunity of observing certain happenings that made me think about all this, and most importantly check if any such power corrupts me too. Realized that my civil side is wild enough :-)

Probably lincoln was right when he said, “To test the true character of a man, give him power!”

Gym Coach

As one of the new initiatives to shape up life, i decided to shape myself up first, and get rid of the booze bubble that doesnot let my pants fit. The health coach wasnt least bit amused by the answers on the questionnaire, and gave me a look which only my school principal ever gave me. That of disbelief and frustration. What followed next was a series of dismal performances at the various health-level-gauging exercises like stretches n push ups. He then decided to have a H2H talk with me first, which truly conveyed the extent to which he takes his job to heart. It goes beyond work, and breaches into a passion to see people respecting their health.

I look around and dont find many friends of mine, who are extremely fit ! Like someone said, its such an hypocricy that indian men consider themselves to be good looking and highly attractive, while sporting bellies that dont let them see their feet ! I know, this post is hypocritic too, considering its me who is talking about preserving health. But, better late than never, especially when you have a coach like mine !

Getting Wiser ?

Today, i got older by an year. Every birthday, i ensure that i spend some time on reflections. An opportunity to look back and take decisions that might avoid me going down the valley. The last one year has been probably the most satisfying in that sense, meaning a lot of learnings to get wise from. I have seen good success and bad failures, been loved to the hilt and also been hated, lots of emotional stress, so i guess the bright spot is that i have a chance to get a lot wiser. But do i actually get wiser ?

I remember the last birthday amidst some great friends, in the function of the launch of a new pub in hyderabad. Did i get any wiser from then ? I dont think so. It was more of a care free attitude, like that of a brat playing his instincts out. Today has to be the most silent birthday of all times. No partying, no freaking around. Just doesnot feel like, blame it on the phase of life. But no regrets, as i am teeming with decisions to implement and get into the next phase of emotion triggers. I have got wiser on relationships, job and friends.

One decision is that i am going to be better able to empathize with my friends who have become fathers by now. I am ready for commitment. Phew!….would be the word from a lot of my frends n family. I plan to get hitched this year, and start being a burden to a chosen one !

Also, i am going to distant my frends for long, signature and wills to an extent they wouldnt like.

Hope i look back at this post a year later, and feel wiser !

Kundali all the way!

One of my friends is looking for a match made in heaven. Yeah, by truly connecting the stars and figuring out the compatibility. The guy is a metro sexual, would date women, have a modern outlook on life and career, but would end up rejecting girls on the basis of kundali ! Somehow, i feel a lot of people around us are like this. Irrespective of the educational background or lifestyle, they stick to their deep rooted conventional practices at times of test. Nothing wrong about it, but i sense a disconnect there. You just cant reduce a person to their DTP of birth! Me thinks that it will take atleast one more generation for the real way of life to emerge from this psuedo living. When individuality is born beyond reasons that the person doesnot influence like appearance and kundali.
Lets see…

iPonder #4 – Celebrity Endorsements

I had a long talk, rather debate with my friend on how much Hrithik revived acer, Aamir sold Tata SKy or Sharukh pepped up compaq. She was of the opinion that a lot of brands end up signing up celebrities to an extent that it actually leads to a brand image confusion. In some cases, it is deemed unneccessary and in some more, irrelevant. She took up the case of Amitabh for eveready. It is true that a few celebrity endoresements work wonders for the brand, but a lot of them fall flat and donot end up influencing the buying behaviour of the consumer, either because it is a low involvement product or becoz the consumer has just not bought the concept.
According to me, they work for the only reason of idol worship in india. People look up to these larger than life celebrities, and trust them and get connected so easily. It just works in India.
I recall a movie “Halla Bol” where they take a dig on this concept. Anyways, can you recall one good endoresement which actually influenced your perception about the brand, and yeah, one ugly one too !
My pick would be – Sharukh for Pepsi and Harsha Bhogle for timex.
P.S – Thalaivar (for the ignorant, am referring to Rajinikanth) has never endoresed any product for the reason, he feels he would be misusing and monetizing the trust placed on him by his fans. One more reason why he is the superstar :-)

guy of the 90s

April 9, 2009 at 6:25 pm | In Uncategorized | 7 Comments

I am referring to that stream of youth who spent their adolescence in the turbulent society of the 90s. Turbulent in the sense of cultural and lifestyle transformations. The generation that stood between two wholly different worlds and in fact experienced the first of many kinds. They drank goldspot, chewed bigfun and remember the grand reentry of coke into india. They waited for hours for their date to turn up at the ice cream parlour down the road, and also later, did sms every minute while sitting in a multiplex, munching a burger. They quite remember superhit muqaubla and baba seghal who ruled it for a while.

Phone codes to escape the wrath of her dad, Lending libraries for peeping into debonair, Colorful cinema hall tickets to collect and FP for the cool quotient. In short, indulgences were hard earned and tolerance was high. Cut to today, where the time and space are influenced majorly by gadgets. A gen who believes the way to party is to shake a leg and down a drink. Chat rooms and scraps dictate romance and google dictates knowledge.

I am really glad to belong to that generation. To have experienced both sides with each having their own edges. I was having a nostalgic conversation with a childhood friend of mine, and realized that a lot has changed and will never be the same again. It has been my pet theme for a long time, and hope to write something substantial on it one day.

Dry Socket Vs Cancer Stick

April 4, 2009 at 4:55 pm | In Uncategorized | 9 Comments

POST UPDATE - I observed that the maximum searches on this blog are to this post ! Never knew, that it is such an universal problem. To clarify, i refrained from smoking for 3 days, and i did not get a dry socket. I rinsed my mouth with an anti bacterial mouthwash every single time though. However, from the discussions i had with my dentist, Dry Socket is EXTREMELY PAINFUL, and suggested timeframe is 7-10days to refrain from smoking.

Well, I had a very bad tooth extraction yesterday. The doc did his part well, but guess the tooth was positioned fancy. Somehow sat through the 2hr ordeal and the worst shock was when he asked me to refrain from smoking for about a week! Your expression would either be a “OMG!!”  or a “WTF” depending on whether you are a smoker or not. I have managed to complete 24hrs, a few minutes back. Dont think i can hold on for long, and been reading on net to cheat on the after-extraction guide. Gonna believe the article of one doc on net, who suggested to refrain from smoking for 3 days only :)

Any experiences/suggestions ?
